Mississippi State shuffles coaching responsibilities

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) Mississippi State is shuffling the responsibilities of some assistants, coach Sylvester Croom announced Tuesday.<br>

New assistant Melvin Smith will be in charge of the defensive backfield when spring workouts begin March 6. Smith, who coached safeties for three seasons at Texas A coached the Bulldogs' secondary from 1996-2001.<br>
<br>
Shane Beamer will shift from cornerbacks coach to running backs coach. Last year's running backs coach, Freddie Kitchens, recently joined the Dallas Cowboys' staff.<br>
<br>
Defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, who previously coached the safeties, now will focus on middle and weakside linebackers. Amos Jones remains in charge of the special teams and strongside linebackers.<br>
