Shots fired during Dawson Co. standoff

By by Ken Stanford
DAWSONVILLE - A Dawsonville man was still in custody at last check following a standoff with police during which he allegedly fired at least two shots.

Sgt. Tony Wooten of the Dawson County Sheriff's Office says the incident began innocently enough.

"A mother asking for a welfare check on her 8-year-old child who was with his father," Wooten said.

But, Sgt. Wooten says Darren Sellers, 36, refused to come outside when officers arrived at the house in the Turnalay Branch area of Dawson County and fired one shot in the direction of the officers and another into a telephone in the house.

Sellers eventually surrendered without further incident after his son placed a call to 911 from another phone, according to Wooten.

Sellers is charged with possession of methamphetamine, discharging a firearm while under the influence of drugs, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer (there were three officers in the vicinity when the shot was fire outsided the residence), cruelty to children in the first degrees and terroristic threats.

Sgt. Wooten says no one was hurt during the ordeal.
