Charlton Co., Dublin tie for State Championship

DUBLIN, Ga. - Dublin won the first half and Charlton County won the second half, but nobody won the game.

The Irish scored 10 first-half points to take an early lead, but the Indians fought back with touchdowns in each of the final two periods for a 13-13 deadlock that had the teams sharing the GHSA Class AA state championship.

``I still don't know what to think,'' said Dublin coach Roger Holmes.

The Irish (14-0-1) and Indians (14-0-1) were tit-for-tat in nearly every offensive and defensive category, combining for 521 yards of offense.

Dublin came out strong, using a 12-play 85-yard drive to set up the first score of the game. Fullback Thomas Barnes ran it in from 2 yards to give Dublin an early 7-0 lead. The Irish added to their lead in the second quarter, capping a 10-play 57-yard drive with a Drew Griggs 25-yard field goal to extend the Dublin edge to 10-0. Griggs later added a 33-yarder in the third quarter to put Dublin up 13-0.

Charlton senior quarterback Dwight Dasher rallied his team in the second half, guiding the Indians to a 3-yard Lemuel Walker score in the third quarter and later tossing a 28-yard pass to senior wide receiver D.J. Donley in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 13-13. On the ensuing PAT, Dasher's kick sailed low.
