By The Associated Press

A man suspected of killing a passenger in a car and dumping his body in South Carolina last September has been arrested and charged with a single count of murder, police said Thursday.

Atlanta police spokesman Joe Cobb said Kevin Kinnard Gross, 25, of Washington, D.C., was returned to Atlanta on Monday and is being held in the Fulton County Jail. Gross was arrested Dec. 5 in Washington.

Gross was in a car in Atlanta with Tafari Omari Myers, 21, of Stone Mountain, and two other men around 1 a.m. on Sept. 17 when Gross pulled out a handgun and shot Myers, Cobb said in a statement.

He said Gross then forced the driver to take him, the dead man and another passenger to Anderson County, S.C., where Myers' body was dumped in the woods.

South Carolina authorities quickly learned of the killing from one of the car's occupants who said he escaped while the other two men were disposing of Myers' body. His name has not been released.

The witness told police that Myers had wanted to get about 300 miles from Atlanta before disposing of the body. However, the vehicle began to run out of gas, and the shooter chose to get rid of the body before stopping to fill up, police said.

Cobb said Gross forced the remaining witness to drive him back to Atlanta, where he boarded a bus to Missouri.
