Ex-NFL player and college coach Andre Waters dies

<p>Andre Waters, a former defensive back for the Philadelphia Eagles, died early Monday, according to officials at the state university where he worked as an assistant coach.</p><p>Officials at Fort Valley State University said they had no details about Waters' death. University spokeswoman Cindy Gambill said they got the news from Waters' family members.</p><p>Waters, 44, was in his first year coaching at Fort Valley State.</p><p>A native of Belle Glade, Fla., he died in Tampa, according to his family, Gambill said.</p><p>Officials with the Tampa medical examiner's office were expected to release more details on his death later Monday afternoon.</p><p>Gambill said university employees and students are "very distraught."</p><p>"Everybody has been in such shock," she said.</p><p>Many students, including football players, are not on campus this week because there are no classes before the Thanksgiving holiday Thursday.</p><p>"The administrators are trying to contact as many students involved in the football program that they can reach," Gambill said.</p><p>Head football coach Deondri Clark said in a news release, "Coach Waters built on an outstanding college football career to break into the highest ranks of professional football, playing with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Arizona Cardinals from 1984 to 1995."</p><p>He also coached at Morgan State, the University of South Florida and Alabama State University before coming to Fort Valley State this summer.</p><p>Funeral arrangements are not yet final, officials said.</p><p>___</p><p>HASH(0x1cdbea8)</p>
