'A refugee camp in the heart of the city'

By from staff reports
ATLANTA - More than 20 students, faculty and staff from Gainesville State College and Brenau University visited Atlanta's Piedmont Park recently for a guided tour of "A Refugee Camp in the Heart of the City."

The outdoor educational exhibit was set up by Doctors Without Borders, and is touring four cities this fall. Visitors were asked to imagine themselves among the 33 million people around the world, displaced by war, epidemics, man-made and natural disasters.

At the different stations, different issues were addressed, such as: Where will I find food? Where will I find water? Will I be safe? What if I get sick? The college groups' guide was a nurse who had previously gone on three field assignments to Africa.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international nonprofit aid organization founded in 1971, which now has sections in 19 countries. Last year, it delivered emergency aid to people on more than 3,800 field assignments in 70 countries.

The trip was co-sponsored by Brenau University's International Club and Gainesville State College's Students for a Progressive Society.

The two groups are planning another collaboration for UN Day, October 24, called "The Perfect Prayer: An Inter-religious Dialogue." A staged reading of excerpts from Suehyla El-Attar's play, The Perfect Prayer, will precede a panel discussion by some representatives of world religions discussing what meaning their faith gives to their personal lives.
