STATESBORO - Travis Clark passed for 375 yards and Georgia Southern scored a 10-yard run by Lamar Lewis with a minute to play to earn a 28-21 win over Elon Saturday.
The Phoenix (3-3, 1-2 Southern Conference), winless in seven games against the Eagles (3-3, 2-1), led 14-10 at the half and after falling behind tied it at 21-21 when Karlos Sullivan returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown with two minutes to play.
Jayson Foster returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to the Eagle 47, and Clark led a four play drive that ended when Lewis scored the winning touchdown with 1:03 remaining.
Clark completed 27 of 39 passes as he had the third best passing game in school history. It was the best passing game by a Georgia Southern quarterback since Tracy Ham threw for 402 yards against East Carolina in 1984.
Prior to Sullivan's interception Clark had thrown 149 consecutive passes without being picked off.
For the second straight week the Eagles were held to less than 100 yards on the ground. Georgia Southern had only 59 yards on 23 attempts after getting a then school-record low 65 last week against North Dakota State. Foster also had nine catches for 84 yards as he equaled the school record for receptions in a game.
Elon's Wes Pope threw two touchdown passes in the first half, both to freshman wide receiver Terrell Hudgins who scored on passes of 18 and 22 yards. Hudgins wound up with seven catches for 100 yards while Pope completed 17 of 35 passes for 214 yards and had two interceptions.
Patrick Bolen kicked two field goals, the second from 39 yards out in the third period to cut the Phoenix lead to 14-13. The Eagles then took the lead four minutes into the fourth quarter when Foster caught a four-yard pass for a score to cap a five play, 82 yard drive.
