Lorenzo Ashbourne of Smyrna, Ga., and Julius Harris of Riviera Beach, Fla., both 18 years old, were arrested Monday and each was arraigned on a felony charge of first-degree rape, according to the university police department. The specific charge involves an attack on a victim who is physically helpless and incapable of consenting to sex.
They were being held at the Albany County jail and were suspended from the football team, university Provost Susan Herbst said in a prepared statement.
The woman student was an acquaintance of Ashbourne and Harris, Herbst said, adding that university police are continuing the investigation along with the Albany County district attorney's office.
Rachel McEneny, a spokeswoman for the district attorney, said the office's sexual assault team was sent to a campus dorm at 9 p.m. Sunday. She said she could not comment further.
The Great Danes football media guide lists Ashbourne as a cornerback and Harris as a receiver. The team competes in Division I-AA of the Northeast Conference and is scheduled to play St. Francis in one of this weekend's homecoming events.
