Cities, Counties to receive money for landfill cleanup

ATLANTA - Governor Perdue announced Monday that 10 cities and counties across northeast Georgia will benefit from a Hazardous Waste Trust Fund administered by the Georgia EPD.

"This funding will protect citizens and clean up environmental hazards in Georgia communities," said Governor Sonny Perdue. "The Hazardous Waste Trust Fund is a priority that I was proud to fully fund in the last budget cycle."

The cities and counties will receive almost six hundred thousand dollars for environmental cleanup of aging, leaking municipal landfills.

The fund is financed by fees collected from industries and local governments that produce, handle and dispose of solid and hazardous waste. The fund is also financed by fines collected from violators of Georgia's environmental laws. The funding is held in the state treasury and appropriated to the trust fund by the Governor and the Georgia General Assembly during the annual budget process.

Seventy-one cities and counties across the state will receive over seven million dollars for the work.
