By The Associated Press

The arrests of a prominent Cherokee County coroner _ along with his wife and two of his children _ were the talk of their north Georgia town Thursday.

Mike Huey, 44, a deputy coroner with the county who also co-owns Huey Funeral Home in Canton, and his wife, Karen, were arrested Wednesday and charged with possession of methamphetamine. Karen Huey was also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Nathan Huey, 19, was charged with possession and distribution of marijuana. Justin Huey, 20, was charged with possession and sale of marijuana.

All four were released on bond Wednesday night. Sheriff's officials would not say how much methamphetamine Mike Huey had, or whether he was making or selling the drug from the funeral home.

Huey Funeral Home has been a fixture in Canton since Ernest and Ann Huey opened in 1961, and Ann Huey still runs the business with her son. It is one of the two biggest and oldest funeral homes in the area, said Norman Sosebee, who owns Sosebee Funeral Home and attended high school with Ernest Huey.

"Mike's problems just amazed everybody," Sosebee said. "They're just great, great people. I can't believe that this is happening. With the old citizenry, it is the topic of conversation, of course."

The arrests came after the Sheriff's Department, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, took out a warrant to search the Huey family's vehicles following an eight-month investigation, sheriff's deputy Nicole Ebbeskotte said.

Mike Huey, who has been a deputy coroner for 13 years, has been placed on administrative leave without pay until the case is resolved, Coroner Earl Darby said.
