ATLANTA - Members of what authorities said was a violent Georgia street gang have been indicted under federal racketeering laws, officials from the U.S. Attorney's office said Monday.

Fourteen members of the gang known as ``Sureos-13,'' also known as ``SUR-13,'' were named as part of a racketeering conspiracy and three others were charged with violent crimes related to racketeering. A two-year investigation of the gang led to the indictment, officials said.

``Members of SUR-13 were responsible for a significant amount of drug and violent crime occurring within Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, and Cobb Counties over the last several years,'' U.S. Attorney David Nahmias said in a statement.

The racketeering indictment alleges gang members participated in murder, attempted murder, carjacking, armed robbery and drug dealing. A federal grand jury returned the sealed indictment July 12. It was unsealed Friday to allow authorities to coordinate arrests.

The defendants named in the indictment are: Armando Prudente, 33; Nicaso Calderon Uribe, 34; Carlos Manuel Lorenzana, 28; Roberto Sandoval, 23; Israel Cruz, 26; Avila Gilberto Maldonado, 26; Jorge Flores, 28; Arturo Sanchez, 28; Angel Mazaiegos, 22; Ricardo Gama, 27; Carlos Martinez, 22; Jose Tapia, 22; Emanuel Avila-Villasana, 21; and Luis Alberto Nandy, 21, all of Atlanta.

Others include Freddie Sandoval, 21; Rodolfo Perez, 26; and Edgar Perez, 25, of Lawrenceville and Alejandro Salgado, 25, of Marietta, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

In the investigation, authorities also arrested and prosecuted seven other gang members, deported 40 others and seized 13 firearms and $7,000 in cash.

SUR-13 has active known members in Hall County according to law enforcement.
