Resurfacing planned on main Gainesville thoroughfares

GAINESVILLE - A resurfacing project that will continue into the fall begins Sunday on the main north-south artery through Gainesville.

Georgia Department of Transportation Gainesville District Engineer Russell McMurry says the work will begin on the south end, on E.E. Butler Parkway at Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard.

"We have scheduled all the work to be done overnight as weather allows. Our goal is to get in the road, get our work done and get out of the way with as little disruption to downtown Gainesville life as possible," explained McMurry. "A DOT Contractor will begin work Sunday night at 8:30."

McMurry said work will begin in the northbound lanes and lanes will be closed from MLK to the Civic Center via Butler and Green Street). The work will continue each night until 5:00 a.m.; no work is planned Friday or Saturday nights. He said work will occur every Sunday through Thursday night that weather allows.

The completion date for the 1.46-mile project is November 30, 2005, however, resurfacing work should be completed within one month, weather permitting. The project also includes the upgrade of 11 intersections along the route. GDOT says the estimated construction
cost for the resurfacing and traffic signal improvements is $1.69 million.

Work to upgrade the signals will begin after the resurfacing has been completed. Work will occur at one intersection at a time so traffic at only one intersection at a time will be affected.
