Gainesville group headed to Catholic World Youth Day

GAINESVILLE - Nearly 50 young adults from St. Michael's Catholic Church in Gainesville will get a chance next week to attend a Mass celebrated by the pope.

They are part of a contingent from the Archdiocese of Atlanta that will be in Cologne, Germany for Catholic World Youth Day.

About 400,000 young people, ages 20-33, from 193 countries are expected to attend the 20th annual Catholic World Youth Day, celebrating the legacy of Pope John Paul II, who died in April, and who started World Youth Day.

The Mass celebrated by his successor, Pope Benedict XVI, a native of Germany, will take place next Tuesday.

Dr. Kelly Bowring of Southern Catholic College in Dawsonville says "it's incredibly symbolic that Pope Benedict is from Germany and that the first World Youth Day of under his pontificate, already planned two years ago by John Paul II, is going to be in Germany, his home country."
