GAINESVILLE - Kay P. Laws is the new director of the Head Start and Pre-K programs in twenty counties coordinated by Ninth District Opportunity (NDO).

Laws is a native of Barrow County and earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Brenau University. She joined Ninth District Opportunity, one of Georgia's 20 community action agencies, in 1981 and has been assistant director of Head Start and Pre-K since 1989.

"We're confident Kay will continue the tradition of excellence in our classrooms," said NDO's executive director, Janice A. Riley. "She will bring new vitality to the initiatives associated with our curricula, especially working with families and their needs," she said.

Recently, programs administered by NDO were deemed Programs of Excellence by the National Head Start Association. Additionally, Georgia's Head Start programs were ranking among the top three in the nation.

Laws will coordinate the programs for more than 4,000 students in 20 counties. She is active at Hoschton Baptist Church where she teaches Sunday School and serves as the secretary of the Winder-Barrow High PTO. She and her family live in Barrow County.
