Richmond makes pitch to lure NASCAR Hall of Fame

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) A delegation of NASCAR officials has wrapped up its tour of possible locations for a car racing Hall of Fame.<br> <br> Richmond, Virginia, has hosted NASCAR races for more than a half-century. It was the last stop yesterday in a five-city tour that also has taken the officials who will participate in the decision to Atlanta; Charlotte, North Carolina; Daytona Beach, Florida; and Kansas City, Kansas.<br> <br> During their presentation, Virginians Racing for the Hall of Fame also highlighted Richmond&#39;s proximity to tourist destinations that include Colonial Williamsburg, Civil War sites, King&#39;s Dominion and Busch Gardens amusement parks, the nation&#39;s capital and the oceanfront.<br> <br> But the state&#39;s traditions in racing also were front and center as the group made certain the NASCAR representatives knew there are 37 race tracks in Virginia, two Nextel Cup Series races a year at both Richmond International Raceway and Martinsville Speedway and two more just across the border in Bristol, Tennessee.<br> <br> Officials do NOT expect to pick a site before December.<br> <br> (Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press.
