HONOLULU (AP) For Jerry Glanville, returning to coaching more than a decade after leaving the N-F-L was largely to be involved in the lives of what he calls the ``greatest generation in history.''
The 63-year-old Glanville hasn't coached since the Atlanta Falcons fired him following the 1993 season. He is entering his first season as defensive coordinator at Hawaii.
Glanville says his weeklong visit with U.S. troops in Iraq last year renewed his interest in returning to football. He said it ``humbling to see the total commitment from 19-year-olds.''
Hawaii coach June Jones brought in his former boss to rebuild the Warriors' young defense that ranked 117 out of 118 Division One schools last season and was dead last in the nation against the run. Glanville has the qualifications of helping Hawaii's defense, which allowed 38 points per contest last season.
He first joined the Falcons in 1977 as a defensive back coach and then served as defense coordinator. He has a record of turning around defenses both in Atlanta and in Houston, where he also served as head coach before returning to Atlanta. Jones worked for him with the Falcons and became head coach after Glanville was fired.
