GAINESVILLE - Needing to win the final two games of the season on consecutive days to win the area title, the Gainesville A's American Legion baseball team responded to the challenge.
The A's got a RBI hit from Chris Bell in the seventh inning and then Clay Haynes pitched the final two innings to earn the save in a 5-4 win over Cumming Wednesday night at Ivey-Watson Field and win the top-seed in the area tournament, which begins Friday in Canton.
The A's (20-12, 7-3) beat Canton 14-7 Tuesday night to set up the showdown with Cumming. The A's had lost to Cumming on Monday.
Justin Satterfield got the win for Gainesville pitching seven innings.
In addition to the save, Haynes also provided the big blow with a a three-run home run. he finished 2-for-2 with four RBI on the night. The night before against Canton Haynes had three hits and five RBI, including a two-run homer.
Russ Williams and Nick Murphy also had two hits for Gainesville. Jay Tatum also had one hit.
The A's next will play Saturday against the Canton-Alpharetta winner at 10 a.m. Saturday in Canton.
