ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Kevin Gryboski was shocked when he found out he had been traded from a team that has gotten back into first place to one slipping away from the top of its division.
Gryboski joined the Texas Rangers today, a day after being traded from Atlanta for a low-minors starter.
Gryboski said -- quote -- ``I was shocked and so were 24 other guys on our team. We had just tied for the N-L East lead, then to get called and told I was traded was kind of shocking. It was very tough, but I'm a Ranger now and want to help this team.''
The Rangers were eight games back in the A-L West going into their game tonight against Oakland, which overtook Texas for second place this week. Atlanta was tied with Washington at the top of the N-L East.
Gryboski, who had a two-point-95 E-R-A in 31 outings for Atlanta this season, figured part of the reason for the trade was that he is arbitration eligible at the end of the season and the Braves have a roster filled with rookies.
Gryboski said -- quote -- ``So they want to give the younger guys a chance and I was the odd guy out. I want to show them that I could have done more over there. But they always have deep pitching in the Atlanta organization so they had extra guys in the pen.''
