A 72-year-old Wal-Mart greeter was seriously injured when he was run over while trying to stop a suspected shoplifter.

The incident began Saturday afternoon when a security officer at the store saw a man stealing DVDs, Marietta police spokesman Brian Marshall said.

When the security officer and the greeter, Lucief Zylanz, confronted the man at his car, the man's door hit Zylanz and knocked him down. The man then drove over Zylanz' leg, chest and head.

Zylanz suffered a punctured lung, broken ribs and facial injuries. He was taken to Atlanta Medical Center and was listed in stable condition, Marshall said.

"He is expected to live. But he was hurt pretty bad," Marshall said. "He was just trying to do his job and protect the store against shoplifters."

Meanwhile, Cobb County police arrested Bradley Chapman, 32, and his wife, Natalie Chapman, 31, in connection with the greeter incident after their car crashed into an unoccupied house during a car chase. The car chase reached speeds of 100 mph, Marshall said.

The Chapmans' 10-year-old son was with them at the time. Police took him into protective custody, Cobb County police spokesman Dana Pierce said.

Charges of shoplifting, simple battery, aggravated assault, injury by a motor vehicle and hit-and-run were pending against the couple, Marshall said.

___

HASH(0x1cd9ebc)
