COLUMBIA, S.C. - Police have charged a 25-year-old Columbia man in the stabbing of South Carolina freshman pitcher Andrew Cruse.<br>

John Michael Eckweiler, 25, was arrested Sunday evening and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department. He was being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.<br>

Investigators say Eckweiler was identified by witnesses and by Cruse, who was stabbed in the upper body with a knife. Cruse was treated and released from Palmetto Richland Hospital and was in good condition, Columbia police said.<br>

Cruse was celebrating his 21st birthday last week in the city's Five Points bar and restaurant area near campus when he and Eckweiler began arguing. Police say the argument turned physical and Cruse was stabbed.
