Man charged with stabbing S.C. freshman

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Police have charged a 25-year-old Columbia man in the stabbing of South Carolina freshman pitcher Andrew Cruse.<br> <br> John Michael Eckweiler, 25, was arrested Sunday evening and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department. He was being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.<br> <br> Investigators say Eckweiler was identified by witnesses and by Cruse, who was stabbed in the upper body with a knife. Cruse was treated and released from Palmetto Richland Hospital and was in good condition, Columbia police said.<br> <br> Cruse was celebrating his 21st birthday last week in the city&#39;s Five Points bar and restaurant area near campus when he and Eckweiler began arguing. Police say the argument turned physical and Cruse was stabbed.
