EAST POINT - Atlanta-area cyclists have a new venue on which they can test their skills.
Instead of chugging away on the open road, some cyclists now are flying around the newly renovated Dick Lane Velodrome - a fifth-of-a-mile track with 37-degree banking located just south of Atlanta.
A spunky group of cyclists gather every Wednesday for organized races at the velodrome. Nearly all are weekday warriors -- folks who hold down regular jobs during the day, then head to the track in the evening.
Most of the competitors are experienced cyclists but neophytes when it comes to track racing. They must go through a four-week beginner's course, which covers the basic rules of the sport, some of the terminology and track etiquette.
A group of volunteers formed the East Point Velodrome Association, which raised $200,000 to renovate the 30-year-old track and get it re-opened last month.
