Afleet Alex wins Preakness

BALTIMORE (AP) ``Afleet Alex'' proved to be a standup horse at the Preakness Stakes.

Afleet Alex managed to win the 130th running of the Preakness despite a near-fall at the top of the stretch. Afleet Alex was knocked to his knees after appearing to clip hooves with ``Scrappy T.'' But he kept his balance and finished almost five lengths ahead of Scrappy T.

Kentucky Derby winner ``Giacomo'' finished third, ending his bid to become the first Triple Crown winner since ``Affirmed'' in 1978.

Afleet Alex paid 8-60, 5 dollars and 3-60.

It's the first Preakness victory for jockey Jeremy Rose, and the fifth straight time the Preakness favorite has won.
