Company expands list of possibly contaminated sausage

<p>State agriculture officials have added to the list of sausage products to be pulled from store shelves after scientists found a potentially harmful bacteria in a sample.</p><p>Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin said Tuesday that Savannah-based Roger Wood Foods has expanded its list of products possibly contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.</p><p>On Saturday, Irvin announced the bacteria was found in Roger Wood Preferred Recipe Beef Smoked Sausage. The 16-ounce package was marked 469D "Sell by May 13, 2005."</p><p>Tuesday's expanded list includes five products produced March 10 in a plant identified as "EST.8025" or "P-8025" and with the date code, "Sell By 5/13/2005."</p><p>The are:</p><p>_ 1-pound packages of Roger Wood Preferred Recipe Beef Smoked Sausage</p><p>_ 2.5-pound packages of Roger Wood Great Grillers smoked sausage, made with chicken, turkey, pork and beef</p><p>_ 3-, 4- and 5-pound packages of Roger Wood Family Pak Chicken, Pork and Beef Weiners</p><p>The suspect products also were shipped to Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina.</p><p>Irvin said anyone who has purchased any of those products should return them to the store.</p><p>Listeriosis, the disease caused by the bacteria, primarily affects pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems.</p><p>Symptoms include fever, muscle aches and sometimes diarrhea and nausea.</p><p>About 2,500 people become seriously ill with the disease each year and 500 die.</p>
