Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox was ejected in the first inning of Monday's game against the Washington Nationals by plate umpire Randy Marsh.

Cox apparently was complaining about balls and strikes called by Marsh in the top of the first inning when John Thomson issued two walks before giving up a two-run single to Ryan Church. Cox and Thomson reacted to Marsh calling a ball on a close 3-2 pitch to Nick Johnson.

Cox, standing on the top dugout step, continued to complain after the third out of the inning.

It was the first ejection of the season for Cox, who was tossed five times last year.

Third base coach Fredi Gonzalez and pitching coach Leo Mazzone filled in for Cox. Bench coach Pat Corrales usually fills in when Cox is thrown out of games, but Corrales is away from the team due to surgery to correct problems following offseason knee replacement surgery.
