Davis, Pollack go in first round of NFL draft

By The Associated Press

David Pollack is getting a new position in the NFL. Thomas Davis isn't sure what position he'll play.

Both Georgia stars were drafted in the first round Saturday, while teammate Reggie Brown went early in the second.

Davis was selected 14th overall by the Carolina Panthers, while Pollack went three picks later to the Cincinnati Bengals. The NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles took Brown with the third choice of the second round, 35th overall.

Davis played both safety and linebacker for the Bulldogs, and he's not sure where he'll play with Carolina.

"I just really want to play the position the coaches feel I can help the team," Davis said by phone from his hometown of Shellman, Ga.

The Bengals need help on the defensive side, one of the things keeping them out of the playoffs. They were one of the league's worst at stopping the run the last two seasons, which both ended at 8-8.

Pollack, a defensive end at Georgia, will get a chance to turn that around. But first, he has to learn a new position _ Bengals coach Marvin Lewis intends to turn his top pick into an outside linebacker.

The 6-foot-2, 261-pound Pollack had a celebrated career at Georgia. He set a school record for sacks, twice won the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation's top defensive end and also won the Lombardi Award as the top lineman overall.

The Bengals expect Pollack eventually to complement Brian Simmons at outside linebacker, and perhaps fill in as an extra lineman on passing downs.

"That would be something that I would love to do," said Pollack, who started as a defensive tackle at Georgia before moving to end. "But I haven't talked to the team enough to know position or anything like that. So your guess is as good as mine."

Davis' future may be decided by Pro Bowl linebacker Mark Fields, who returned to form with the Panthers after missing the entire 2003 season battling cancer. Now a free agent, Fields has postponed signing a new contract until after his annual medical checkup next month.

"We certainly hope we get Mark back and if we do, we'll be in great shape," general manager Marty Hurney said. "But if not, we have to prepare for that as well."

The 6-1, 230-pound Davis led Georgia with 81 tackles and wowed Bulldog fans with his ferocious hits. He also had three sacks, forced three fumbles and made one interception.

Carolina coach John Fox isn't concerned about where Davis plays.

"He could be a Derrick Brooks-type linebacker or a Roy Williams type of safety," Fox said. "The position is the easy part. The fact that we got an excellent defensive player is the hard part."

Cincinnati began leaning toward Pollack after Lewis spent extra time with the player during the February combine.

"We had nobody to interview, so he spent about 45 minutes with us one night," Lewis said. "His magnetism and everything kind of proceeds his play, which is great."

___

AP sports writers Joe Kay in Cincinnati and Jenna Fryer in Charlotte, N.C., contributed to this report.
