BRISTOL, TENNESSEE - Just when you thought you'd heard the last of Milli Vanilli, the duo's last chart-topping ditty from 1989 reared its head at Bristol Motor Speedway: Blame it on the rain.
While ominous weather threatened to wreak havoc Friday, it was Saturday that ended up being all wet as rain (and intermittent snow flakes) forced NASCAR officials to first cancel Busch Series qualifying and then postpone the Sharpie Professional 250 until 10:30 a.m. Monday.
Rain was persistent throughout Saturday, but officials held out hope that there would be a break in the weather to at least get the race started. At about 5:30 p.m. ET blowers took to the high-banked .533-mile track, but they had little affect against Mother Nature.
NOTE TO BRISTOL FANS
Per NASCAR Busch Series rule 9-5.1, owners' points set the starting lineup. Series points leader Carl Edwards and Jeff Burton will start on Row 1. Burton and car owner Kevin Harvick actually switched car numbers for this race to ensure that both of the team's entries would make the race -- Burton's No. 21 on owner points and Harvick's No. 29 via a victory in 2004.
Clint Bowyer, defending Busch Series champion Martin Truex Jr. and Tony Raines round out the top five.
Reed Sorenson, who won last week's race at Nashville, Jeremy Mayfield, Ashton Lewis Jr., Kenny Wallace and Denny Hamlin complete the top 10.
Because of having to set the starting lineup via owners' points, six drivers failed to make the race: Justin Ashburn, John Hayden, Eric McClure, Jay Sauter, Tim Sauter and Brad Teague.
Eleven Nextel Cup regulars will start the race. Seven of those already have at least one Busch Series win at Bristol: Harvick (3), Matt Kenseth (2), Michael Waltrip (2), Burton, Jeff Green, Dale Jarrett and Sterling Marlin. The other Buschwhackers are Greg Biffle, Edwards, Mayfield and Joe Nemechek.
Oddly enough, it was April 2, 1998, that Milli Vanilli's Rob Pilatus, one half of the Grammy-winning group that was later exposed as a lip-synching fraud, was found dead of a drug overdose in his hotel room near Frankfurt, Germany.
