Health volunteer recruitment meeting in Gainesville Thursday

GAINESVILLE - North Health District 2 brings its Public Health Community Volunteers campaign to Gainesville this week.

As we were first to report in February, its part of a mandate from the Department of Homeland Security for communities across the country to maintain a repository of drugs and medical supplies.

A recruitment meeting will be held at the Gainesville Civic Center Thursday from 6:00-7:30.

"We're asking for people who have various skills to volunteer to help us administer medicines in case of a mass casualty incident," says Dave Palmer, spokesman for Health District 2.

Palmer said the recruitment began in the smaller counties in the North Health District and that response has been good. The health district has partnered with local county governments, hospitals and other organizations to develop plans to carry out the mandate.

Palmer says there are no age limits for volunteers as long as a person is old enought to be responsible.

"We were even looking at some of the scout troops around, on up - as long as folks are capable of doing the work."
