Terrell County knocks off Calhoun County for Class A title

MACON - Shankel Allen's 3-pointer with 3:48 remaining provided the go-ahead points and helpd Terrell County beat Calhoun County 48-45 Saturday for the Georgia High School Associations Class A girls championship at the Macon Coliseum.<br>

Allen scored only eight points, but her late trey put No. 2-ranked Terrell County (25-1) ahead to stay.<br>

``I'm a senior and this is my last game,'' Allen said. ``We had to win.''<br>
<br>
Unranked Calhoun County (21-8) used a 10-0 spurt to close the first quarter and take a 17-4 lead. Terrell slowed chipped away, three times getting to within one point only to have Calhoun County answer.<br>

Calhoun County finally tied the game at 41 on a basket by Florida State signee Tanae Davis, who finished with a game-high 26 points. An exchange of baskets left the score tied 43-43 when Allen hit the momentum-changing 3-pointer.<br>

Calhoun County had one chance to tie, but Joe Donna Molden's 3-point was short and Terrell controlled the rebound as time expired.<br>

Molden led the Cougars with 19 points and Brittany Martin added 13 points. Monshay Thomas scored 14 for Terrell.<br>

``After playing them twice during the season, we knew this wouldn't be an easy game,'' said Terrell coach Tammye Jenkins, whose team split with Calhoun County in the regular season. ``We knew it would be hard.''<br>
<br>
It was the first state championship for Terrell County's girls in Class A. The Lady Greenwaves won two straight titles in doulbe-A between 1985-86.
