GAINESVILLE - Georgia DOT District Engineer, Russell McMurry announces lane closures on the Longstreet Bridge on Cleveland Highway in Gainesville have been delayed and will not begin Monday night, as planned. Weather permitting, work is now scheduled to begin Sunday, February 27 at 9:00 and will continue nightly.
"We are using a new system to replace the driving surface of the Longstreet Bridge," McMurry said. "It utilizes precast, concrete sections of the bridge deck or driving surface. The new sections just fit to the bridge and will allow us to do the whole bridge more quickly than the old way but we have to have the right materials to begin.
Due to delays in receiving those materials needed for the precast sections of the deck we are delayed again. If weather allows and the materials arrive, work will begin on Sunday the 27th and will continue nightly."
The contractor has 120 days from the beginning of construction to complete the Longstreet Bridge over the Chattahoochee River. Once Longstreet is completed work will begin on the Bell's Mill Bridge, further north on Cleveland Highway.
