QB doubtful but insists he will face Bears

By The Associated Press

Despite bruised ribs that prevented him from practicing Wednesday, quarterback Michael Vick promised to return when the Atlanta Falcons visit Chicago this weekend.

"No concerns," Vick said. "I'll be out there. I guarantee it. The game is a must-win situation. I just want to be there to aid my guys and try to make some plays so we can keep ourselves in the hunt."

Vick, who is listed as probable, did not return Monday night after leaving in the fourth quarter of the Falcons' 19-point win over New Orleans. He was injured as he tackled Saints cornerback Jason Craft, who picked off a pass that Will Smith tipped near the line of scrimmage, and fell in the second quarter.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection finished with 269 combined yards _ 231 passing _ and he ran for two of his three touchdowns.

X-rays taken on the right side of his torso were negative.

Vick is 33-18-1, including 2-2 in postseason, as a starter since the Falcons drafted him No. 1 overall in 2001. A broken leg in August 2003 caused Vick to miss 12 starts that year as Atlanta went 2-10.

Matt Schaub, a third-round pick last year, appears to have more upside than Doug Johnson and Kurt Kittner, Vick's previous backups. Even so, Schaub fell to 0-3 following a Week 5 loss to New England in which passed for 298 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Schaub took all the snaps with the first-team offense Wednesday. Vick threw several passes early in the session, but he was not dressed to practice.

A slight freezing rain, combined with a wind-chill temperature of 25 degrees, reminded the Falcons (8-5) of the deep freeze they'll face Sunday night against the Bears (9-4).

Vick believes Atlanta will persevere. One of his favorite games was a 27-7 victory at Green Bay in the playoffs three seasons ago. Snow fell at Lambeau Field as the Falcons became the first visiting team to win a home playoff game against the Packers.

Even colder weather greeted Atlanta in postseason trips to Philadelphia at the end of the 2002 and '04 seasons. The Falcons convincingly lost both times.

"This is a situation where we cant hold anything back," Vick said. "We have to let it all go. Regardless of how cold it is or how hard the ball is, for 60 minutes we just have to toughen up and make every play we can because if we lose this one there is really no tomorrow."
