Beauty queen Sharron Nicole Redmond, who was acquitted of murder earlier this year in the death of her boyfriend, has filed a countersuit against the man's family.

Responding to a $10 million lawsuit filed last month against her by Kevin Darnell Shorter's parents, Redmond is seeking more than $2 million in damages from the victim's estate.

She says in the lawsuit that Shorter lied to her, hit and kicked her, threatened her with violence and followed her around throughout their relationship.

Jeffrey Laskey, the Shorter family's attorney, said he's confident a jury will see through Redmond's claims.

"Regardless of what Nikki Redmond has filed or claims, nothing in her counterclaim will justify her taking another life," Laskey said. "It will not change the fact that in a fit of rage over another woman, she pointed her gun, pulled the trigger and fired the bullet that killed Kevin Shorter."

Redmond claimed she was acting in self-defense when she shot Shorter on Dec. 16, 2003, just four months after she was crowned Miss Savannah. She also said Shorter had been abusive.

The parents had said the lawsuit was not about money but because they want justice.

But Redmond's attorney, Mike Schiavone, disagreed.

"This lawsuit is about money, period," Schiavone had said.

The shooting occurred outside the Savannah home of Rachel Hall, another woman Shorter had been dating. Redmond came to her house wanting to discuss their rivaling relationships with Shorter.

Redmond and Hall had both dated Shorter for about three years and he had given both women engagement rings.

___

HASH(0x1cdc210)
