No. 8 UCLA Upends Oregon State 51-28

By
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- Drew Olson threw for a UCLA-record six touchdowns, and Maurice Drew accounted for 250 yards and two scores Saturday in the eighth-ranked Bruins' 51-28 victory over Oregon State.

Olson had tied the school record of five touchdowns passes - held by Cade McNown - a week earlier in an overtime win over Washington State.

The Bruins (4-0 Pac-10) are 7-0 for the first time since 1998 and only the fourth time since 1954.

Olson completed scoring throws of 43 and 20 yards to Drew, 2 and 3 yards to Marcedes Lewis, 48 yards to Ryan Moya and 46 yards to Brandon Breazell.

The record touchdown came on a perfectly thrown ball that Breazell, in full stride, caught over his shoulder for Bruins' final touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Drew and UCLA's high-powered offense was too much for the secondary of the Oregon State (4-3, 2-2), although former UCLA quarterback Matt Moore, running back Yvenson Bernard and receiver Mike Hass helped the Beavers move the ball on the Bruins as well.

Olson completed 16-of-24 for 262 yards. In the first half, he threw two scoring strikes to Drew, one to Moya and another to Lewis as the Bruins built a 31-14 lead.

Drew, bouncing off some tacklers, bowling over others, then turning on the speed in the open field, rushed 21 times for 120 yards, including a 29-yarder when he seemed to be stacked up at the line but squirted free to set up UCLA's fourth touchdown.

The 5-foot-8, 205-pounder had 26 touches. He made three catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns, and returned two punts for 63 yards, including breaking out of a crowd on a 59-yard return that set up the Bruins' second touchdown.

Moore, who lost the UCLA job to Olson late in the 2003 season and eventually transferred to Oregon State, went 15-of-25 for 279 and two touchdowns, with two interceptions.

Bernard, a hard-running 5-foot-9, 205-pound sophomore, carried 31 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Hass had seven catches for 199 yards and two scores.

Moore got his team off to a quick start, completing a 48-yard throw to Hass down to the UCLA 37, then connecting with Hass on a 15-yard scoring pass three plays later. UCLA came right back to tie it on an 83-yard drive capped when Olson rolled far to his right, whirled and hit Drew in stride streaking down the left sideline for a 43-yard TD.

After Spencer Havner intercepted a Moore throw and returned it 10 yards to the Oregon State 20 on the next series, Justin Medlock's 27-yard field goal gave the Bruins a 10-7 lead. They led the rest of the way.

UCLA went ahead early for a change. The Bruins had to come from behind in the closing minutes to beat Washington State, California and Washington State in their previous three games.

Medlock was good on three field goals, a 47-yarder in the third quarter and a 37-yarder in the fourth.

© 2005 The Associated Press.
