Tulane, behind local star Owings, baseball preseason No. 1

DURHAM, N.C. - Tulane holds the top spot in Baseball America's preseason Top 25 college baseball rankings for the first time ever.

Coach Rick Jones' Green Wave boasts talent, experience and depth thanks to eight returning starters between the lineup and rotation as well as a top recruiting class and junior transfer Micah Owings, a former Gainesville High standout, to team with fellow two-way player Brian Bogusevic.

Owings transfered from Georgia Tech to Tulane after last season after leading the Yellow Jackets to two straight NCAA playoff appearances.

The next four teams in the rankings - LSU, Cal State Fullerton, Texas and Miami - all reached the College World Series in 2004, with Fullerton capturing the title.

No. 8 Washington, No. 10 Georgia and No. 16 Mississippi earn their highest preseason rankings in school history, while No. 17 Vanderbilt, No. 21 Texas Christian and No. 25 Winthrop each appear in their first preseason top 25.

Oral Roberts makes its first preseason rankings appearance since 1989, checking in at No. 24. Sixth-ranked Stanford is the only school to earn a spot in the preseason top 25 every year since its inception in 1981. LSU has appeared every season since 1990, and from 1985-88.

The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are 2004 final records and do not include ties.
