ROME - Walt Attaway, who coached tennis at Shorter College for more than 40 years, died Thursday after a brief illness.<br>

Attaway, 69, was an instructor and later an assistant professor and coordinator of the health and physical education program at Shorter. He was at the college for a total of 41 years.<br>

Attaway was the winningest coach in the NAIA with more than 750 wins with the men's team. He coached the Lady Hawks for more than 25 years and had 350 wins. The combined 1,100 victories ranks second among all coaches in every division, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.<br>

He was inducted into the NAIA Tennis Hall of Fame in 2001.
