Even before his first regular season game as the Atlanta Falcons coach, Jim Mora faced criticism for the limited playing time given to Michael Vick in the preseason.

Two games into the regular season, the criticism has faded.

In his second start in the team's new West Coast offense, Vick rushed for 109 yards and passed for 179 yards and a touchdown in the Falcons' 34-17 win over the St. Louis Rams Sunday. Vick completed 14 of 19 passes with no interceptions.

"He's a great player, there's no doubt about it," said Rams coach Mike Martz. "I can see why they didn't play him a lot in the preseason. I wouldn't either."

Vick said he is progressing as he planned in the new offense.

"The sky's the limit," he said. "I'm very excited about it."

Martz said Vick "really dominated" the game.

"It was a great performance by a great player," Martz said. "Vick is hard to contain. When you get a shot at him, you have to make sure you get him. However, that's easier said than done. We've got speed on defense, but we couldn't get him."

Vick recorded the third 100-yard rushing game of his career. He rushed for 173 yards at Minnesota in 2002 and 141 yards against Carolina in 2003. Since 1966, no NFL quarterback has rushed for 100 or more yards in a game more than three times. Randall Cunningham, Donavan McNabb and Bobby Douglass are the only other quarterbacks with three 100-yard games.

___

WHAT A RUSH: The Rams' 30 yards rushing is the lowest total allowed by the Falcons since giving up 30 yards to Carolina on Oct. 29, 2000.

___

ONSIDE RECOVERY: Kicker Jay Feely gave proof of the aggressive attitude trumpeted by Mora. Following the Falcons' first touchdown in the first quarter, the kickoff team lined up in a normal formation, but Feely topped the ball in a surprise onside attempt.

Instead of giving the ball a high hop toward one sideline, Feely nudged the ball slightly straight ahead and then chased the ball toward midfield. Feely, known for his aggressive attempts to tackle kickoff return specialists, lunged forward to recover his own kick.

"I'm just glad we have aggressive coaches that are going to lay it on the line, and they're going to go after it," Feely said. "They're not afraid to make a mistake or to not get a play like that."

___

INJURIES: The Falcons' injury of most concern was the sprained left knee suffered by running back Warrick Dunn. If Dunn is unable to play in next week's home game against Arizona, T.J. Duckett would move up as the starter after rushing for 52 yards on nine carries Sunday.

Dunn rushed for 43 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensive tackle Rod Coleman returned after suffering a sprained right hamstring. Receiver Brian Finneran suffered a sprained right ankle.

___

RING OF HONOR: The Falcons raised new banners Sunday in honor of the four former standouts inducted into the team's Ring of Honor. Tommy Nobis, Steve Bartkowski, William Andrews and Jessie Tuggle were the first four players inducted into the ring of honor. Only Andrews did not attend the halftime ceremony.
