Lumpkin to miss season with ACL injury

<p>Kregg Lumpkin, who was expected to be Georgia's starting tailback, will be lost for the season with a knee injury, his father said Tuesday.</p><p>Tony Lumpkin said he has been told by Georgia director of sports medicine Ron Courson that his son suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on the first day of practice Monday.</p><p>The normal recovery period for a torn ACL is about nine months.</p><p>"We'll make it back," said Tony Lumpkin, who visited Georgia running backs coach Ken Rucker, recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner, team chaplain Kevin Hynes and other staff members during the start of Tuesday's practice.</p><p>Kregg Lumpkin suffered the injury when he was running a pass route in a non-contact drill, according to his father.</p><p>"He said he went to make a cut and felt something give," said Tony Lumpkin.</p><p>Kregg Lumpkin had an MRI on the knee Monday night. Courson and Georgia coach Mark Richt were expected to discuss the test results after Tuesday's practice.</p><p>As a freshman in 2003, Lumpkin had 112 carries for 523 yards, ranking second on the team in rushing. He shared the team lead with Michael Cooper with six touchdowns and, following a strong spring, was listed as the starter entering preseason practice.</p><p>Lumpkin rushed for 90 yards and the game-winning touchdown in Georgia's Capital One bowl victory over Purdue. He gained momentum through his freshman season after he was limited by a hamstring injury that kept him out of the first two games.</p><p>Cooper, who rushed for 673 yards last season, likely will move up to the top spot on Georgia's depth chart, at least until Tony Milton has fully recovered from offseason leg surgery. Milton wore a green non-contact jersey Tuesday.</p><p>Freshmen Danny Ware and Robert Brown and senior Albert Hollis also could move into more prominent roles at tailback.</p>
