About 200 "The Club" sandwiches recalled

By The Associated Press

Dandee Foods is recalling its 5.15 ounce "The Club" sandwiches because they have the potential to be contaminated with an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

The infections are caused by Listeria monocytogenes, which might have contaminated about 200 sandwiches distributed to convenience stores in Florida and Georgia. The sandwiches are sealed in a plastic wedge-shaped container and marked with a "Sell By" date of Sept. 3.

Short-term symptoms of infections include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

A routine analysis by the Georgia Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of the bacteria in one sandwich, and the company ordered the recall as a precaution, said a spokesman.

The company urges consumers to return the sandwiches to the place of purchase for a full refund.

No illnesses have yet been reported in connection with this problem, the company said.
