Columbia County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a woman after a two-hour standoff that ended when she emerged from her apartment and pointed a gun at an officer.

Authorities received a call shortly after 5 p.m. Monday from 44-year-old Kimberly Weathers, who was "threatening suicide," said Capt. Steve Morris.

When deputies arrived at the New Petersburg Apartments in Martinez, Weathers was holed up alone in her apartment and then started firing shots at them through a window, Morris said.

"Officers attempted to negotiate with her as they surrounded and contained the scene," he said.

Two hours later, Weathers came out of her apartment holding a handgun. Morris said she first pointed it at herself, then turned and pointed the gun at a nearby officer, prompting deputies to fire.

Morris said "several officers" fired and that they have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the investigation _ a standard policy.

Deputy Coroner Vernon Collins said Weathers died of injuries caused by two gunshots to the chest.

___

HASH(0x2866534)
