OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI - Ole Miss went through its second two-practice day of the preseason Monday, and held a situational scrimmage in the early session.
Enjoying the continued pleasant August weather, the Rebels worked out in full pads for two hours in the morning, doing some individual work and position drills followed by the light scrimmage.
The 50-play effort saw the team work on red zone and goal line play, with the defense holding firm. Rebel head coach David Cutcliffe, the reigning SEC Coach of the Year, was pleased with his club's progress today.
"Overall, I thought the work was good," Cutcliffe said. "I thought the defense did a good job of keeping the offense out of the endzone, although we blew two opportunities offensively to make plays for touchdowns.
"You can tell we're not ready to play a game, which is why you have the live work. We're gearing this practice and the ones toward our first game-type scrimmage on Wednesday afternoon."
Ole Miss returned to the practice field at 6:45 p.m. Monday for a less physical workout. Wearing helmets and shorts, the players focused primarily on fundamentals.
The 2003 SEC Western Division Co-Champion Rebels continue preseason drills Tuesday. Ole Miss will hold "Meet The Rebels Day" Saturday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. CT in The Grove. The Rebels open their 2004 campaign Sept. 4 against Memphis at 6 p.m. at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
