Agent: trade of Pacers' Harrington to Hawks a done deal

By The Associated Press

The Indiana Pacers traded forward Al Harrington to the Atlanta Hawks for Stephen Jackson Thursday in a sign-and-trade deal.

The Pacers announced the trade on the team Web site and scheduled a news conference for 1 p.m. EST, one hour after the Hawks welcomed Harrington at a news conference in Atlanta.

"This is a deal that would have long-term implications for us," said Billy Knight, the Hawks general manager.

Harrington, who came to the announcement in a T-shirt, reversed baseball cap and gym shorts but no overt Hawks apparel, was happy to be there.

"A lot of guys wouldn't be as excited as I was to get to Atlanta. But they have all the things in the right place," said Harrington, who has become one of the league's top players off the bench but wanted more time on the court.

The sign-and-trade deal, in which Jackson would sign a six-year contract with Atlanta before being traded for Harrington, has been in the works for several days.

Jackson, 26, led the Hawks in scoring last season, averaging 18.1 points. He would give the Pacers the consistent outside scoring threat they have sorely lacked.

Harrington gets his wish to go to a team where he can have a greater role on both ends of the floor. He averaged 13.3 points in nearly 30 minutes a game last season, but told Pacers president Larry Bird at a season-ending meeting that he would rather be traded than come off the bench in Indiana again next season.

Bird made it clear on draft night that Harrington would not start for the Pacers ahead of Jermaine O'Neal and Ron Artest.

Miller, however, said Harrington was looking for more than just a starting job.

"Al wanted the chance to grow as a player," Miller said. "That's not a knock on the Pacers _ they just have a lot more talent there right now. In Atlanta, there's a lot more room to develop. He can be a main player on that team and help them produce and win at a high level."
