Pace quickening for primary hopefuls

GAINESVILLE - With the July 20 primaries now less than two weeks away, the pace is quickening for candidates at all levels in Georgia - and you don't have to look any further than the races in Hall County to realize that.

For example, a forum Thursday night at 7:00 will feature the candidates for Hall County commission chairman - incumbent Gary Gibbs and Tom Oliver - at the Flowery Branch Depot.

They'll also face-off next Tuesday at noon before the Gainesville Kiwanis Club - and again the following night at Gainesville College. That forum will also feature the other commission candidates in contested primary races - Augie DeAugustinis and Billy Powell, who are running for the seat being vacated by Roger Cole.

Also on the program will be the candidates in the only contested county school board race July 20 - incumbent Nath Morris and Lynn Whelchel-Lathem.

On Thursday night, as we previously reported, the Lake Lanier Association will host a political forum, also at Gainesville College. The association has invited all candidates for state house and senate from the districts around Lake Lanier and its watershed. In addition, candidates for county commission seats in the seven counties surrounding the lake have also been invited to participate.
