Cumming's Moody finishes second at Georgia Amateur

ATHENS - Despite missing a six-foot par putt on the final hole Sunday, David Denham avoided a playoff when his closest competitor also bogeyed, giving the Tifton golfer a one-shot victory in the Georgia Amateur Championship.<br>

Denham closed with a one-over-par 71 for an even par 280 total for four rounds at the Athens Country Club.<br>
<br>
Griff Moody, the 1980 champion from Cumming, also took bogey on the final hole, staying one shot back and falling into a three-way tie for second place with Taylor Crosby of Athens and Jack Hall of Macon. Crosby had a closing 69 and both Hall and Moody shot 70.<br>

Fifth place went to Doug Stiles of Athens with a 70-284, Jeff Knox of Augusta was sixth with a 74-286, one shot better than Chuck Pinkard of Cumming who closed with a 72.<br>

"This win means a lot," said Denham, a member of the University of Georgia golf team along with Crosby. "From here on out, everywhere I go, I'll be known as the state champion."
