Cumming's Moody finishes second at Georgia Amateur

By
ATHENS - Despite missing a six-foot par putt on the final hole Sunday, David Denham avoided a playoff when his closest competitor also bogeyed, giving the Tifton golfer a one-shot victory in the Georgia Amateur Championship.

Denham closed with a one-over-par 71 for an even par 280 total for four rounds at the Athens Country Club.

Griff Moody, the 1980 champion from Cumming, also took bogey on the final hole, staying one shot back and falling into a three-way tie for second place with Taylor Crosby of Athens and Jack Hall of Macon. Crosby had a closing 69 and both Hall and Moody shot 70.

Fifth place went to Doug Stiles of Athens with a 70-284, Jeff Knox of Augusta was sixth with a 74-286, one shot better than Chuck Pinkard of Cumming who closed with a 72.

"This win means a lot," said Denham, a member of the University of Georgia golf team along with Crosby. "From here on out, everywhere I go, I'll be known as the state champion."
