RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina State is making sure it won't have to replace the goalposts at Carter-Finley Stadium after a big victory this season.
The athletics department is installing hydraulic collapsible goal posts. The new, safety-conscious goal posts can be collapsed within minutes by the push of a button by stadium personnel, and not by a mob of fans.
Fans last tore down the Carter-Finley goal posts after the Wolfpack's 17-7 win over Florida State on November 23rd, 2002. Three people were injured, one with a broken leg.
Clemson has added collapsible goalposts, and Duke is considering installing them as well.
Officials at North Carolina say they'll begin the season with the same goal posts from 2003. Senior associate athletics director Willie Scroggs says the school has discussed switching to the collapsible variety if the old ones get torn down.
