An Atlanta man was sentenced to life in prison for raping and impregnating an 11 year old in a case that sparked a grand jury report questioning the actions of the Department of Family and Children Services and other agencies that handle crimes against children.

Trianthony Timothy Cannon, 36, pleaded guilty to rape, child molestation, aggravated stalking of a child, aggravated assault and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. Superior Court Judge Constance Russell sentenced Cannon on Friday to life in prison plus 80 years.

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard called the case the "most egregious case of child sex abuse I've ever seen."

"Mr. Cannon deserves every minute of the sentence Judge Russell imposed," Howard said Friday.

Police have said that the girl was raped several times from August to the end of last year by Cannon, who lived with the child's mother.

The girl gave birth last month to a boy, who is awaiting adoption. The girl is also in DFCS custody, officials said.

A Fulton County grand jury found in April that DFCS and other agencies, including police, schools and hospitals, were not communicating well enough with each other and were not fully considering cases before taking action.

The girl's mother is in custody awaiting a trial date on charges of cruelty to children in the first degree, contributing to the deprivation of a minor and being party to a crime of rape.

___

HASH(0x28664f4)
