GAINESVILLE - Although the walkers are tired, the money they helped raise in Hall County for the American Cancer Society is hard at work.
The Relay for Life fundraiser resulted in $280,000. The money was still rolling in at 7:00 a.m. Saturday after the12-hour overnight walk wrapped up.
Local Community Income Manager for the ACS Khristina Danchetz said the community helped in other ways too.
"I know a lot of people probably came out to carwashes and bake sales and all kinds of fundraisers that teams were doing throughout the county, and that money went directly to relay."
The local 'relay' helps fund community grants, programs and the ACS office in Gainesville. It also helps fund research, something Danchetz said affects almost everyone.
"(Money goes toward) helping start off those first initial researchers and getting them going with money and such to do the funding for the tamoxifen drugs and the mammographies, those sorts of tests."
89 teams participated in the walk this year, a rise of 19 from last year. The goal for Relay for Life this year is $300,000.
