Store burns in Jasper

JASPER - Some 50 firefighters from three counties have been battling an overnight blaze that destroyed a sporting goods store in Jasper in north Georgia.

The overnight fire at the Bargain Barn is being allowed to burn itself out. Authorities say the store was about 150 yards long and at least 80,000 square feet. The store had about $6 million in inventory.

NO injuries have been reported and there's no word yet on what caused the fire.

Owner Jerry Stover says he had just fallen asleep when he got a telephone call that the store's burglar alarm had gone off. He returned to the store.

The store held thousands of rounds of ammunition and had been in operation since 1961. It employed about 40 people and as many as 55 during the peak season in summer.

Customers came from as far as 150 miles away to shop at the store.
