Guest Conductor named for GSO Patriotic Pops Concert

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - When it's time to "strike up the band" for the Gainesville Symphony Orchestra's annual Patriotic Pops Concert, the longtime conductor will not be waving the baton.

Larry Sims has resigned - and the GSO will be looking at three potential replacements over the course of its 2004-2005 season.

Dr. Gregory Pritchard will conduct the orchestra for the July 3 Patriotic Pops Concert and the Spring Classical Concert.

Dr. Pritchard is currently the Director of Orchestras at Brookwood High School in Gwinnett county and has more than twelve years conducting experience at the university, professional and youth levels.

In addition to Dr. Pritchard's conducting position, he most recently participated in the International Conductors Workshop in Macon as one of nine conductors in a four-day workshop.

He is also scheduled to conduct the GSO at its Spring Classical Concert in April.

The orchestra's Fall Classical Concert will feature Guest Conductor Fyodor Cherniavsky. Cherniavsky is described by GSO Executive Director Pam Slaton as "a guest conductor of national renown." He works with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as a technical producer.

The Guest Conductor for the Gainesville Symphony's Winter Pops Picnic and Concert will be Dr. Wallace Hinson, the Chairman of the Music Department at Piedmont College in Demorest and the Director of Choral Students at the school.

Slaton says the GSO has been "inundated" with applications for the vacant position apparently because "we are one of the few orchestras of our size in the state that is in the black (financially)."
