POTOMAC, MARYLAND - Charles Howell III set a course record in taking the first-round lead at the PGA's Booz Allen Classic at Potomac, Maryland.
Howell blistered the Avenel Course with a 10-under-par 61, including a 28 on his final nine holes. It's the lowest opening-round score on the PGA Tour this year, and the second-lowest overall round of the season. All that despite two bogeys in his first six holes.
He went birdie-eagle-eagle on the three par-fives and made six putts of 15 feet or longer.
Howell leads 1999 champion Rich Beem and Olin Browne by three strokes. Jeff Sluman is four back.
