North Georgia will get a new reservoir, after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gave final approval to the project Tuesday.

Hickory Log Creek Reservoir will provide drinking water to about 760,000 customers in the city of Canton, Cobb County and parts of Paulding and Douglas counties.

"The future of the city is in good stead for the next 50 years," Canton Mayor Cecil Pruett said Tuesday. The city's population of 14,000 is expected to reach 42,000 by 2025.

Canton officials will next select a firm to design a 180-foot dam to contain the 370-acre lake on the city's north side, Pruett said.

Officials expect the design work to take two years and construction at least another two. They estimate the total cost of the project to be $30 million to $35 million.

Water will be pumped from the Etowah River to fill the reservoir in stages. In drought conditions, water will be released from the reservoir, which will hold more than 10 billion gallons when full, to resupply the Etowah and Lake Allatoona.

Cobb currently uses 90 million to 100 million gallons of water per day, drawing half from Lake Allatoona and half from the Chattahoochee River. Canton currently uses about 5 million gallons per day from the Etowah.
