One candidate for Brenau president remains 'under serious consideration'

GAINESVILLE - The Brenau University Board of Trustees, which earlier this week resumed the search for a new president of the school, said Friday one of the three original finalists remains "under serious consideration."

The board also issued a statement apologizing for "the delay in communicating to the full campus our news release of April 1, which related to the decision to continue the presidential search."

The board said it thought everyone on campus would be notified of its vote to continue the search for a new president "at the same time."

The statement went on to say "Since this did not happen we are truly sorry and can assure you that in the future all elements of the campus will be kept posted on any news when it happens."

The board had met to discuss the future of the university and to consider the three finalists in the search to replace Dr. John Burd, who had announced plans to retire this summer.

After the official visit of the three finalists, the seven trustee members of the search committee met to discuss their recommendation to the full Board.

"We were impressed with each of the three candidates, as each brought strong qualifications to be considered," the statement says. "We were also impressed that the three were women, as we realized that the time has come for Brenau to have a woman president."

But the board says a decision among the seven trustees proved to be difficult, as each candidate had respect, confidence and a vision that could lead the University in the future. "As it proved to be, there was no consensus among the trustees in deciding on one particular candidate. Consequently our report to the full board was to be one of indecision."

At the full board meeting, attended by 27 trustees Tuesday, discussion of the candidates continued with no clear-cut decision on one particular candidate, according to the statement. "Unanimous approval by the board, while desirable, is not required. However, a substantial majority by the board is being sought. The group then agreed to continue the search."

The trustees said they are "most grateful" to all three finalists for offering to be a candidate, and in particular Dr. Helen Ray for her loyalty to Brenau, qualifications she presented as a presidential candidate and the high regard each trustee has for her personally.

"We are particularly devoted to Helen and look forward to her continuing as Vice President of Academic Affairs."

The trustees say that while no one of the original applicants is technically eliminated, only one finalist, Dr. Cynthia Farris, remains under serious consideration at this time. In addition, the board, as previously reported, has asked its consultant, Jon McRae and Associates, to continue the search.

After the decision was made to continue the search, the board says it then asked Dr. Burd if he would remain in office until a successor could be named.

"He assured us that he would stay on as president until we could make a decision. It is our belief and desire that a new president could be selected by the end of this calendar year. The trustees do not want to impose on Dr. Burd`s sabbatical year any longer than we have to."

The board's statement concluded by saying it is dedicated to concluding the process in "the most expeditious manner and will keep the campus advised accordingly" and thanked everyone for their "patience and prayer."
